portland timbers x san Jose earthquakes
With a 2-0 victory at Providence Park on Wednesday night, the Portland Timbers took a huge step toward earning their spot in the 2021 MLS Cup Playoffs, while formally removing the San Jose Earthquakes from contention. Following Diego Chara's first-half opening, Asprilla scored a fantastic bicycle kick from beyond the 18-yard box 10 minutes into the second half, leaving jaws agape and virtually clinching a crucial three points for the Timbers. The win strengthens Portland's grip on fourth place and a home Round One playoff game, as well as bringing them closer to sealing a postseason berth, with a four-point lead over the eighth place.
Before the halftime break, Portland had a chance to expand their advantage. JT Marcinkowski of San Jose, on the other hand, had other plans, making a fantastic stop to deny Yimmi Chara following a scramble in front of the goal. But, in the 55th minute, the game's high point and one of the season's most memorable moments was about to occur. Marcinkowski dashed out of his goal but was only able to spoon the ball out of his zone. Even so, Asprilla looked to have dodged the immediate threat by collecting the ball in the top corner of the box with his back to goal. Instead, MLS's very own Mr. October picked up the ball and flew into the air, landing with a looping bicycle kick.
Surprisingly, the game almost produced another Goal of the Year candidate when substitute Sebastian Blanco slalomed his way past what appeared to be the entire Quakes defense before having his attempt stopped on the line. The rebound was subsequently shot off the crossbar by Josecarlos Van Rankin, keeping the score at 2-0.
However, Asprilla's outstanding performance was enough to give Portland the victory and ensure that Timbers supporters in attendance would always be able to claim, "I was there."
