New england revolution x colorado rapids
With a second-half goal, Tajon Buchanan breached the Colorado Rapids' formidable defensive wall, delivering the New England Revolution a 1-0 win and the MLS single-season points record at Gillette Stadium on Wednesday night. In their last match, the Supporters' Shield champions exceeded LAFC's previous 72-point mark from the 2019 season. With the win, the Revs have 73 points and may reach 76 with a Decision Day home game against Inter Miami CF on Nov. 7.
The victory cemented Bruce Arena's position in MLS history, putting him in a tie with the late, great Sigi Schmid for the most victories by a head coach (240). Colorado clinched a top-four position in the Western Conference portion of the MLS Cup Playoffs with results later Wednesday evening (despite the defeat), as they presently sit third in the standings. Despite missing a month due to injury and receiving credit for the assist, Gil set the record for most opportunities created in a season with Buchanan's 74th-minute goal past Colorado goalkeeper William Yarbrough.
The Rapids had their chances to score but were unable to convert on the man-advantages they created on counter-attacks, including a Jonathan Lewis attempt in the 63rd minute that resulted in a deft Henry Kessler defensive play and an 84th-minute Lewis break that gave the visitors their own opportunity to look for the ref to point to the spot. Michael Barrios was also introduced to test the Revs' defense, but Matt Turner kept his sixth clean sheet.
