atlanta united x charlotte fc
Atlanta United upset Charlotte FC 2-1 in the first-ever meeting between the two Southeastern sides on Sunday afternoon at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, thanks to a stoppage-time goal from Jake Mulraney. At the hour mark, Atlanta took the lead after a Christian Makoun penalty on Brooks Lennon. Josef Martinez slipped the ball past a diving Kristijan Kahlina on a clever hesitation move from the penalty spot to put the hosts up 1-0.
Six minutes later, Adam Armour leveled the game by heading a Ben Bender corner kick past Brad Guzan for the expansion club's first goal in league history. Mulraney was on the end of a wonderful pass by Marcelino Moreno and shot past Kahlina for the game-winner late in second-half stoppage time to give Atlanta the three points. Charlotte FC appeared to be holding on for the first point in the club's history. Atlanta United, on the other hand, had other plans. Despite controlling possession in the first half and missing several opportunities, the Five Stripes took all three points in the first chapter of the Southeastern derby.
