New England Revolution x Toronto FC
An even matchup between two Eastern Conference teams fighting their way into the MLS playoff picture despite being at the bottom of the standings. This game was nothing but a back and forth game, resulting in a 0-0 draw. The first half had some impressive shots on goal, but both goalies were prepared. Alex Bono made a save in the 18th minute when Brandon Bye, off of a turnover, kicked the ball from well beyond the box. When he did block it, the ball stayed in play and New England tried a second attempt, but the Toronto defense made sure that didn't go in.
You could see that players were getting tired and defenses were opening up. Insigne would seek an advantage when he saw one of those moments where the defense was not there. In the 72nd minute, Sebastian Lletget lost the ball in the middle to Jonathan Osorio, who waited for Insigne to get into position, and when he did, he passed the ball to him, then Insigne, with a wide-open look, shot it from the top of the box. Petrovic dove to the top right corner and made the save. A questionable call was made by the referee in the 76th minute when Matt Polster attempted to save a shot from Deandre Kerr. The initial call was for a PK, but as you can tell from the replay, Polster got to the ball before Kerr attempted a kick. After going to VAR, the referee upheld the initial ruling. The stadium erupted in an uproar of boos when the referee decided on the PK. Petrovic made a huge diving save when he blocked the shot to keep it tied 0-0. In extra time, New England had a perfect opportunity to take home the win in front of a home crowd of 29,097 when Giacoma Vrioni, off a cross from Arnór Traustason, tried to come up from the middle of the net to shoot it, but with two defenders surrounding him and Bono coming out to disrupt the play, the shot went wide left.
