uswnt x colombia
This is the second straight game that the United States has faced Colombia in a friendly match. Both of the games were in the United States, and this game was played in Sandy, Utah at Rio Tinto Stadium, home of Real Salt Lake. This game was meaningful for one player, Carson Pickett. Carson is the first person in USWNT history to make an appearance with a limb difference. She played for all 90 minutes, filling in for Emily Fox, who is out with an injury.
The United States held the position for the majority of the game and got to the goal numerous times, only to come away with 2 goals for the game. Colombia goalkeeper Catalina Perez made some key saves and she kept Colombia in the game early on. A crucial mistake happened in the 22nd minute when Colombia defender, Manuela Vanegas, who was defending a shot by Sofia Huerta, tried to spearhead a ball out of bounds, but instead, the ball found itself in the back of the net for an own goal. After some more attempts at adding to that lead, including one in the final minute of the first half when Sofia Huerta intercepted a ball and instead of driving down the side, she crossed the ball to Alex Morgan, who headed the ball, but she didn't get enough of the ball and instead the ball hit the top post. The first real task for United States goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher came in the 55th minute when Leicy Santos started driving the ball past the USWNT defense and then fired the ball to the net, which therefore required Alyssa to reach to her right to at least get a chance to swat it away, which she successfully did. Woman of the match and late substitution, Kelley O'Hara, scored the second goal for the United States in the 77th minute. Kristie Mewis started with the ball by going through defenders and when she was unable to, she back passed the ball to Ashley Sanchez, who crossed the pass to Trinity Rodman, who headed the ball to play, and when Kelley got the ball, she kicked the ball to the back of the net.
This match completes a series of friendlies, as now the United States is set to prepare for the Concacaf Championship. The first match is against Haiti on July 7th.
