Colorado Rapids x Vancouver Whitecaps
The Colorado Rapids earned three points in the Western Conference thanks to a 3-1 victory against the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday night in front of their home crowd. Early on, the Rapids found themselves down a goal, but they came storming back with three of their own to seal the deal.
Vancouver took the lead in the first half thanks to a goal by Brian White, who buried the ball past William Yarbrough and Lalas Abubakar after the Rapids' clearing was botched. The Rapids didn't panic and scored an equalizer following the opposition's errors and poor play in the middle of the field. Forward Jonathan Lewis sped up the left wing, entered the 18, and found Felipe Gutiérrez with a beautiful pass. Gyasi Zardes would add another goal to his tally thanks to the coolness and precision of the Chilean who set him up. In the 33rd minute, the Rapids went up 1-0 when Lewis was fouled inside the area while making an inside hard run. Rubio took the penalty and scored, giving him 13 goals for the year. On Saturday night, Lewis would score the game-winning goal for the Rapids after receiving a long Jack Price ball across the box in the 75th minute. Lewis had already assisted on the team's first goal and drawn the penalty that Rubio converted.
His long-range effort sailed over the goal mouth, clipped the underside of the crossbar, and trickled across the line to effectively end Vancouver's hopes.
