Atlanta United x Memphis 901 FC
After a tight match and 30 minutes of additional time added, Memphis 901 FC advanced to the quarterfinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup by defeating Atlanta United 2-1. Atlanta United's elimination from the competition at this stage is the earliest ever.
Forward Tyler Wolff, one of four Atlanta United players playing for the first time this season, scored the game's only goal in the match's opening minutes. A long ball from Amar Sejdi, a midfielder, found its way to Luiz Arajo down the right side of the field. Over the Memphis back line, Arajo lobbed the ball to Wolff, who was racing to the far post. Wolff hammered the ball home as he slid it into the lower right corner.
The Atlanta Falcons maintained their advantage until the 96th minute when Memphis' Phillip Goodrum was taken down by a sliding tackle from defender Juanjo Purata inside the penalty area. After a penalty was awarded for the infraction, Goodrum made the kick.
Memphis added to their advantage in the 10th minute of the first overtime. Nighte Pickering scored at the top of the 6-yard box after receiving a cross from the right by Luiz Fernando, a midfielder. With the extra back and forth that happened after this, Atlanta simply couldn’t find a way back into the match. This result after the full 90 means that Atlanta will be eliminated from the Open Cup at a much earlier stage than predicted.
