Portland Timbers x Minnesota United
Bongokuhle Hlongwane scored in stoppage time to give Minnesota United a 1-0 win against the Portland Timbers in a contest that left Providence Park breathless. Portland did not waste any time making it clear that they would not be sitting back and gauging the competition.
However, both teams struggled to find their groove in the first half, but their respective coaches probably felt good about their teams' efforts after the break.
Both sides slowed down significantly to start the second half, losing some brilliance that made the first half so exciting. However, the Timbers began to click around the 60-minute mark, increasing their pressure and passing accuracy in the offensive third.
In the last seconds of stoppage time, Ménder Garca was sent through on goal after chasing down a pass played over the top. Bongokuhle Hlongwane received the ball after it was played across the box by Kervin Arriaga, Bongokuhle’s header from the top of the box found its way through a sea of Portland Timbers defenders and into the far corner to seal a dramatic late victory.
The final numbers reflect how the game really played out: a close contest that might have gone any possible way. The away team had more high-quality attempts on goal, but overall they took fewer shots. The Timbers will be disappointed with the opportunities they wasted, while Minnesota will be happy with the three points they earned.
Late victories are exciting and terrifying all at the same time. The goals are fantastic, but they wouldn't have won the game if not for the efforts of all 11 players.
