In a captivating clash at Providence Park, the Portland Timbers and D.C. United battled to a thrilling 2-2 draw on Saturday night, treating fans to a rollercoaster of goals and excitement.
The Timbers seized an early lead in the 18th minute when Dairon Asprilla, in a breakaway run orchestrated by Santiago Moreno from the midfield, found himself near the penalty kick spot. Moreno's precise pass set up Asprilla, who unleashed a clinical right-footed strike into the middle of the goal, giving Portland a 1-0 advantage.
The second half continued the goal-scoring spectacle, with the Timbers extending their lead in the 61st minute. Eric Miller delivered a well-placed lob into the 18-yard box from the left side, finding the ever-ready Santiago Moreno. Moreno showcased his scoring prowess with a right-footed shot into the lower right corner, increasing Portland's lead to 2-0.
However, D.C. United mounted a spirited comeback within a ten-minute span. In the 72nd minute, Portland conceded a handball in the box, leading to a penalty kick. Mateusz Klich stepped up and confidently converted, narrowing the gap to 2-1.
The drama escalated in the 82nd minute when Aaron Herrera embarked on a dynamic run through the right side of the box. His well-placed cross into the six-yard box found Kristian Fletcher, who finished the play with a precise left-footed shot into the right corner of the goal, leveling the match at 2-2.
