Portland Timbers x Club León
The Portland Timbers triumphed in their opening match of Leagues Cup 2024, defeating Club León 2-1 at Providence Park on Sunday night. Zac McGraw was the hero of the evening, scoring both goals for the Timbers in the 41st and 90th minutes, with Evander providing assists for both. This victory places Portland at the top of West Group 5 and marks a significant achievement as they secure their second-ever Leagues Cup win and their first against Liga MX opposition.
Portland took the lead in the first half through McGraw's header from an Evander corner, leveling the score after Alan Medina had given Club León an early advantage. McGraw's second goal, also a header from an Evander corner, came in the final minute of regular time, sealing the victory and showcasing the team's resilience and set-piece prowess. McGraw's brace was particularly notable as it was the first of his professional career and the first time a Timbers defender has scored twice in a match since Larrys Mabiala in 2018.
The Timbers' performance was marked by several key contributions, including Evander's exceptional playmaking, which now sees him leading the team with 15 assists in all competitions in 2024. New signing Mason Toye also made his debut, adding depth to the squad. The victory not only boosts Portland's standings in the Leagues Cup but also demonstrates their ability to come from behind and secure crucial points, a promising sign as they continue their campaign in the tournament and beyond.
