Utah Royals x Portland Thorns
Utah Royals FC earned a hard-fought point at home, securing a promising goalless draw against the Portland Thorns at America First Field on Saturday, June 29, 2024. From the outset, the Royals dominated the match, with their first clear-cut opportunity arriving in the seventh minute. Madison Pogarch initiated a counterattack, passing to Hannah Betfort, who then set up Brecken Mozingo for a shot that narrowly missed the target. The Royals continued to press high and create chances, with Dana Foederer’s fierce low strike rattling the post in the 10th minute and Ally Sentnor’s electric performance threatening the Thorns’ defense throughout the first half.
Despite their relentless efforts, the Royals couldn't find the back of the net. Betfort came close again in the 35th minute, but her low right-footed strike was tipped away by Portland's goalkeeper Shelby Hogan. The second half saw continued dominance from the Royals, who crafted several clear opportunities. In the 62nd minute, a perfect cross from Paige Monaghan set up Betfort for a header that narrowly missed, and the introduction of Nigerian international Ify Onumonu in the 66th minute provided an additional attacking spark.
The game reached its climax in the dying minutes, with Onumonu coming closest to securing a dramatic late winner in the 88th minute. A beautifully executed counter-attack saw Ally Sentnor release Mozingo, who then played in Onumonu for a one-on-one with Hogan. However, Hogan's crucial save denied the Royals the ecstasy of a late victory. Despite the draw, the Royals' solid defensive performance and offensive creativity showcased their potential, earning them a much-needed point and a confidence boost for future matches.
