Chicago Fire x Houston Dynamo
After winning the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, Houston Dynamo FC beat Chicago Fire FC 4-1 on the road today to move to the semifinals.
During the 11th minute of the game, Houston was awarded a penalty kick after striker Nelson Quiónes was pulled down by Arnaud Souquet inside the area. Amine Bassi, playing up front, scored the game's first goal on the penalty kick.
In the 31st minute, Adalberto "Coco" Carrasquilla, a midfielder for the Dynamo, found Aliyu Ibrahim, a striker, on the break to double the visitors' advantage. The Nigerian forward sped past the last defender and slotted the ball under Spencer Richey's diving crossbar for his second goal of the tournament.
In the 39th minute, the Fire got one back when a corner kick found Souquet unmarked at the near post. The goal was the first allowed by the Dynamo in the Open Cup this season, and it came 310 minutes into play.
The third goal for Houston came from a free kick that was taken after Carrasquilla had earned it for his team near midfield in the 57th minute. Herrera changed the play and found Quiónes on the other side of the field; the Colombian striker dribbled into the box and forced a stop; the rebound went to Aliyu, who scored his second goal of the match, making it 3-1.
Héctor Herrera won a battle on the outside of the box in the 75th minute, and Quiónes capitalized by scoring the game's last goal. The score would end at 4-1.
