Portland Thorns x KC Current
On Saturday, the Current beat the Portland Thorns 1-0 at Providence Park in Portland, Oregon. Michelle Cooper scored the game-winning goal in the first half from the penalty spot.
The Current wasn't an aggressive club looking to control the ball and score goals for the majority of the first half. However, they were tenacious on defense and effective in their counterattacks. After 30 minutes, the Current finally broke through. Alexa Spaanstra was fouled inside the box, and her teammate Cece Kizer fed the ball to Michelle Cooper, who blasted it into the net for the Current, putting them ahead 1-0. They may not have known it at the time, but it would prove to be the game-winning goal.
The Current held on to their 1-0 advantage for the remaining hour of play. Cassie Miller, the KC Current keeper, made nine saves to preserve the shutout and maintain her composure amid constant mayhem in the penalty area. The final whistle would blow with the Current leaving victorious with the 1-0 victory.
