real salt lake x houston dynamo
On a rainy and cold Wednesday night at Rio Tinto Stadium, Anderson Julio scored his fourth goal of the season in the 88th minute to bring Real Salt Lake to a thrilling 2-1 victory over Houston Dynamo FC.
RSL swept a two-game home series with the win, following a 1-0 triumph against Austin FC in Week 19. Rubio Rubin supplied his fourth assist on the winner. Justin Meram scored the game's opening goal 82 minutes in, giving RSL a lead they would keep for the rest of the first half.
Fafa Picault equalized for the Dynamo six minutes after halftime with a corner kick header. The Dynamo are currently winless in their past 13 games and have lost their last four. With the loss, the Dynamo dropped to 12th in the Western Conference, while RSL moved up to fifth, ahead of Minnesota United FC on goal differential. After combining on the penalty arc with Rubin, Julio's driven effort into the bottom right corner capped a run of late opportunities for the hosts, who appeared to find a last gear in the closing 15 minutes.
In the 80th minute, Marko Maric denied Damir Kreilach at the near post, and seconds later, Darwin Ceren's last-minute tackle denied Rubin a chance to score. The second 45 minutes perfectly encapsulated why two rosters with a lot of similarities, RSL and Houston, are in such opposite places in the table. Houston dominated the first 30 minutes of the second half, but following Picault's equalizer, they didn't put a single shot on target the rest of the night. The hosts then generated three opportunities that looked more menacing than any of the Dynamo's, culminating in the on-loan Atletico San Luis forward's goal, after Julio and Maikel Chang joined in the 80th minute.
