Philadelphia union x santos laguna
The Philadelphia Union were eliminated from the Concacaf Champions League semifinals by Club America 4-0 on aggregate with a 2-0 loss to Las Aguilas in the second leg Wednesday night at Subaru Park, extending Major League Soccer's title drought in the competition for at least another year.
Club America basically sealed their position in what will be the eighth all-Mexican CCL final in the 79th minute on Nicolas Benedetti's deflected goal to finish a deadly counter-attack in the 79th minute. During second-half stoppage time, Henry Martin scored a consolation goal.
Union coach Jim Curtin emphasized the significance of scoring the first goal to put pressure on Club America, especially if it occurred early in the game. The hosts came agonizingly close on many times, with Kacper Przybylko's finest chance coming from the penalty spot in the 50th minute after defender Bruno Valdez was brought down from behind.
Guillermo Ochoa dived to stop Jamiro Monteiro's well-taken penalty kick off the post and then swiftly rose to deny Cory Burke on the rebound. Philadelphia had three chances to break the stalemate in the closing 10 minutes of the first 45 minutes of a tense first half that featured 24 combined fouls and five cards. Burke intercepted a cross in the box, but a sliding tackle by Pedro Aquino for a Philadelphia corner snuffed out what seemed to be an open chance from close range. Jakob Glesnes grabbed onto a recycled Olivier Mbaizo service two minutes later, but his header went over the crossbar.
Another Liga MX opponent ousted MLS' final surviving team, resulting in more CCL sorrow. The Union asked all the right questions, but couldn't overcome their 2-0 setback in the first leg at Estadio Azteca, and were given a fatal blow on a late counter. Last year's Supporters' Shield champions defeated Atlanta United and Deportivo Saprissa of Costa Rica en route to the semifinals.
