USMNT x Costa rica
The US men's national team overcame Costa Rica 2-1 in the final match of October's Concacaf World Cup Qualifying window on Wednesday night at Lower.com Field after bouncing back from a poor start. The US would concede in the first minute of play when an unmarked Keysher Fuller grabbed onto Ronald Matarrita's back-post service and bounced his attempt past Zack Steffen, who has featured infrequently for Manchester City this season.
Sergino Dest would then tie the score in the 25th minute with a scorching left-footed shot from the edge of the 18-yard box into the top left corner after collecting the ball from Yunus Musah, who had a strong outing after struggling in Panama. Miles Robinson would also make up for an almost costly defensive blunder by dispossessing Bryan Ruiz, who had initially broken through the USMNT defense on a midfield run. That intervention came at the right time, as the deciding goal was approaching. In the 66th minute, replacement goalkeeper Leonel Moreira, who had replaced an injured Keylor Navas at halftime, scored an own goal after a blasted shot from Weah would rebound off the post and off the keeper’s back to give the USMNT the lead.
The United States Men's National Team would finish the full 90 bouncing back from their first qualifying setback in Panama to overcome Costa Rica and earn six points in the October window. This maintains Gregg Berhalter's team within striking distance of first-placed Mexico ahead of their match in Cincinnati next month. All eyes will be on what the squad can do when they clash with their bitter rivals in the coming month.
