Vancouver Whitecaps x Colorado rapids
The Vancouver Whitecaps continued their temporary stay at Rio Tinto stadium while hosting the struggling Colorado Rapids. The Rapids have yet to win a match this year and were eyeing up this Vancouver side to play host to their first three points of the year. Vancouver came into this match without losing so far in 2021. Things would not stay this way though. The match would start off with a selection of chances for Vancouver and Colorado. Later into the half a misplaced pass out of the back for Colorado would require an acrobatic goal line clearances from Wilson to keep it level. The breakthrough wouldn’t come for the Rapids until a free kick came in the 25th minute. Diego Rubio would rocket home the free kick from about 20 yards out directly into the upper left corner of the net. This Golazo would send the Rapids into halftime with a solid 1-0 lead.
The second half would begin with a slow build but in the 55th minute the Rapids would once again pull off a goal line clearance to keep it level. The Whitecaps would also keep themselves in the game with a blocked shot from Rose that appeared to be imminently putting Colorado up by 2 until his tackle blocked the shot. However, in the 79th minute a foul in the box would appear to give Vancouver a PK. Thankfully for the Rapids though the call would be overturned under VAR. With this gift in the lap of Colorado they would hold on just long enough to edge out the Whitecaps for the three points handing them their first loss of the season.
