Austin fc x Portland TImbers
With a dominant 4-1 victory over the Portland Timbers on Thursday night, Austin FC celebrated their first win at Q2 Stadium, snapping an eight-match losing streak. Gallagher electrified the packed stadium when he guided a ball from Tomas Pochettino to the inside of the left post with his left foot in the 28th minute. It brought an end to a goalless streak of nearly 210 minutes at the freshly christened stadium.
It took only five minutes for a second goal to be scored at home. Julio Cascante, a former Timbers defender, won a 50-50 challenge in midfield and sent a strong header back into the attacking third. Diego Fagundez, who took a touch into the box and guided his shot inside the right post to increase Austin's advantage, received a fast pass from Dominguez.
Later, after a lengthy Video Review, referee Ted Unkel went to the monitor to see if Pablo Bonilla's sliding challenge on Dominguez in the area after clearing the ball was worthy of a penalty kick. Although no penalty was granted, the Timbers were awarded a considerable amount of stoppage time, which they used to pull back a goal before the interval. A lobbed Diego Valeri pass found Marvin Loria in space behind Zan Kolmanic, and the Costa Rican settled the ball before playing in front of the goal. After that, Jeremy Ebobisse scored from within the six-yard box with a sliding finish.
In the second half, Austin had chances to score an insurance goal, but Hector Jimenez's drive was deflected off the crossbar by Dario Zuparic, and Steve Clark dived to his right to deny Pochettino.
Alex Ring grabbed onto a Dominguez free-kick and headed inside the far post in the 77th minute, completing the comeback. On a fantastic night in Austin, Austin FC's first set-piece goal offered yet another memorable memory. Jimenez would add a fourth four minutes later to seal the victory and keep the festivities going. This was a significant win for Austin FC, and it will be a memory for the expansion team and its fans for a long time. It ended an eight-match losing streak and brought them even with the Timbers, who were just above the playoff line. Meanwhile, the Timbers have gone winless in their last three games and are coming off a 16-day layoff.
Q2 Stadium was the place to be. The future is certainly looking bright in Austin.
