REAL SALT LAKE x VANCOUVER WHITECAPS

Real Salt Lake beat the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1 at Rio Tinto Stadium on Friday, earning their first win in five games. Erik Holt first headed home to put RSL in lead for the second time on the night with seven minutes of extra-time remaining, before Damir Kreilach scored his second goal of the game to put the game out of reach at the death.

The hosts dominated the first half, setting the tone early and forcing goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau into saves with Anderson Julio and Rubio Rubin. Just before halftime, RSL got their reward when Kreilach scored his fourth goal of the season in the 43rd minute. Albert Rusnak was located on the outskirts of the penalty area by Andrew Brody's ball from the left side of the field. Rusnak promptly returned the ball to Kreilach, whose shot from outside the box struck the back of the net thanks to a deflection to beat Crepeau. In the second half, the Whitecaps were re-energized. The squad moved from two shots in the first half to eleven in the second, and only nine minutes into the second half, they had even the score. On the right side of the field, Javain Brown regained possession and fired an enticing cross in front of goal, where Whitecaps debutant Brian White was waiting from within the six-yard box. The former New York Red Bulls striker's close-range attempt was helped into the net by a touch from Aaron Herrera.

The Whitecaps maintained their lead, appearing to be the more likely of the two teams to score the game-winning goal. Andy Rose came close in the 71st minute, but his long-range drive hit the crossbar and went out.

The hosts, on the other hand, scored two goals in stoppage time to seal the match.
