USMNT x Costa rica
The United States men's national team defeated Costa Rica 4-0 in an international friendly on Wednesday at Rio Tinto Stadium, thanks to goals from Brenden Aaronson, Daryl Dike, Reggie Cannon, and Gio Reyna. Following their momentous victory over Mexico, Gregg Berhalter fielded a rotated starting lineup that controlled the game from the start, with the US creating a barrage of early chances that culminated in Aaronson's opening goal. Dike and Cannon then scored their first international goals, before Reyna won and converted a late penalty kick to round out the scoring.
The US scored after only seven minutes of play, thanks to a well-executed sequence that culminated in Aaronson's third international goal. It began with a through ball from LA Galaxy midfielder Sebastian Lletget to left back Antonee Robinson, who sent in a cross that Dike hit off a defender, allowing Aaronson to pounce on the rebound and score the game's first goal.
Dike then scored his first senior team goal a few minutes before halftime. The 20-year-old striker ran onto a line-breaking pass from former Philadelphia Union defender Mark McKenzie and calmly finished the breakaway past Moreira to make it 2-0.
After the second-half kickoff, it didn't take long for the Yanks red, white and blue to find a third goal, as Cannon scored in the 52nd minute with a nifty left-footed finish after winning the ball deep in the Costa Rica end thanks to a turnover forced by Tyler Adams.
The US then added a fourth goal on a 77th-minute penalty kick by Reyna, who earned the opportunity after being fouled in the Costa Rica box. Moreira was sent the wrong way by the 18-year-old, who slotted home an easy finish for the game's final goal.
It wasn't as high-stakes as the recent victory over Mexico, but it was a good opportunity for some of the roster's depth players to get minutes and make their case to Berhalter to stay in the fold ahead of this summer's Concacaf Gold Cup and World Cup Qualifying. In that regard, promising young players like Aaronson and Dike made the most of the opportunity.
