Portland Thorns vs CF Monterrey
In the semifinal of the Women's International Cup at Providence Park, the defending champions took on CF Monterrey. Portland's winning streak was broken when Monterrey defeated Portland in overtime.
Marissa Everett scored a goal for Portland in the fifth minute to put the team up early. Her goal was made possible by a pass she received for Janine Beckie as she slipped behind the defenders, enabling her to break away and dash towards the goal. Portland continued trying to expand their lead, but Monterey was always there to produce saves. When Monterrey was given a free kick before halftime, they had one more excellent chance to level the game. Sadly, the free kick was headed too forcefully and went over the goal.
Portland kept up the pressure by producing chances that required CF Monterrey to make challenging saves. In the 68th minute, Diana Garca of CF Monterrey sped by a few defenders for an easy-look goal, which took Portland's goalie off guard when she hesitated to move. When Christina Burkenroad received a cross and headed it with no power, the goalie made an easy stop to preserve the victory for CF Monterrey in the waning moments of the game. Both teams engaged in a PK shootout in this match. In the first round of the shootout, both goalies made saves. Not until Round 2 did CF Monterrey score to make it 1-0 in their favor.
