San Jose Earthquakes x LAFC
On Saturday afternoon in Santa Clara, California, at Levi's Stadium, the San Jose Earthquakes upset LAFC, the reigning MLS Cup winners, 2-1. With this win, they have handed Los Angeles FC their first loss of the season after coming off their Champions League playoff win. The attendance of 45,112 for Saturday's game at Levi's Stadium was the third-highest of any MLS match this year.
Cristian Espinoza scored the first goal for the Quakes in the eighth minute. Just beyond the penalty area, Jeremy Ebobisse fed Jamiro Monteiro, who threaded a pass between two LAFC defenders and set up Cristian Espinoza for a low shot that beat goalkeeper John McCarthy to make it 1-0.
Denis Bouanga would end up scoring in the 30th minute to pull LAFC level. In the 83rd minute, San Jose scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick by Cristian Espinoza, his second of the match. After being fouled inside the area, Ebobisse was awarded a penalty kick, which Espinoza converted smoothly to sneak ahead 2-1 and steal three massive points for the San Jose faithful.
