Portland Thorns x Washington Spirit
Portland Thorns FC secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Washington Spirit at Providence Park, extending their winning streak to three consecutive matches and maintaining their strong form in the NWSL.
The Thorns wasted no time in taking the lead, with Sam Coffey opening the scoring in the fourth minute after a precise pass from Hina Sugita. Coffey's clinical finish gave Portland an early advantage, setting the tone for the rest of the match.
Christine Sinclair extended the Thorns' lead in the 22nd minute with a well-taken goal, capitalizing on a headed ball from Isabella Obaze. Sinclair's goal marked a significant milestone, tying her for the second-most goals in NWSL history as a member of the Portland Thorns.
Despite Washington Spirit's efforts to mount a comeback in the second half, including a late goal from Lena Silano in the 86th minute assisted by Trinity Rodman, the Thorns' defense held firm to secure the victory.
The match showcased Portland's resilience and defensive solidity, highlighted by crucial interventions from players like Marie Müller, who saved a shot off the line in the first half, and goalkeeper Shelby Hogan, who made a miraculous save in the second half to deny Croix Bethune.
