Utah Royals FC x Chicago Red Stars
Utah Royals FC began their 2024 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) home campaign with a disappointing 0-2 loss against the Chicago Red Stars in front of a sell-out crowd of 20,370 fans. Despite a strong start and controlling possession for much of the game, URFC couldn't convert their chances into goals.
Chicago took the lead in the 50th minute when Ally Schlegel scored a header following a long throw into the box from Sam Staab. The ball found its way to Schlegel, whose header eluded URFC goalkeeper Carly Nelson and found the back of the net.
The Red Stars extended their lead in the 77th minute through Ava Cook, who finished off a well-worked passing sequence on the wing initiated by Maxi Rall. Cook's goal sealed the victory for Chicago, leaving URFC with work to do to bounce back in their next match against the North Carolina Courage.
Despite the loss, URFC had promising performances from debutants Ally Sentnor, Brecken Mozingo, Agnes Nyberg, and Dana Foederer. With areas to improve and adjustments to make, URFC will look to regroup and secure their first win of the season in their upcoming fixtures.
