Columbus Crew SC x Sporting Kansas City
After overcoming a back injury, Cucho Hernández is back in top form for the Columbus Crew. The star striker continued his scoring streak by netting a hat trick in Saturday's dominant 4-0 win over Sporting Kansas City. This impressive performance marked his third consecutive game with a goal, bringing his season tally to nine and making it five goals in his last three matches.
Hernández's resurgence puts him back in the conversation for the MLS Golden Boot, despite Real Salt Lake’s Cristian "Chicho" Arango leading the race with 16 goals. Hernández’s midseason push showcases his determination and skill, positioning him as a formidable contender in the league. His hat trick also placed him among the elite, becoming the fifth active MLS player to record at least three career hat tricks, all achieved within his last 20 regular season games.
Last season, Hernández had an outstanding campaign with 16 goals and 11 assists, earning the MLS Cup 2023 Most Valuable Player presented by Audi honors. His pivotal role in the Crew's success was highlighted by his game-opening penalty kick that led to a 2-1 victory over LAFC in the final. Hernández’s recent performances suggest he’s poised to replicate, if not surpass, last year's remarkable achievements.
