FC BARCELONA x HOUSTON DYNAMO
In a tense match against the Houston Dash, the FC Barcelona Women's Team finished third in the Women's International Champions Cup. With a large number of blaugrana fans in attendance at Providence Park in Portland, Jonatan Giraldez decided to field a very different team than the one that lost the semi-final against Olympique Lyonnais.
Despite possessing 75 percent of the early possession, his team struggled to parlay that advantage into anything threatening, but Ana Crnogorcevic broke the deadlock with a beautiful shot that bounced in off the post. Houston came out stronger in the second half, quickly tying the game with Naughton, and then Groom demonstrating her aerial prowess to put the Texans ahead.
Later on, Giraldez made a number of substitutions, including giving Lieke Martens her first taste of the preseason game, and it quickly paid off when Alexia scored from the penalty spot. Barcelona was desperate to win this game, and Alèxia was the most incisive player of them all until she finally found the net again, this time from open play, for the game's winning goal.
Barcelona, who lead the chances on goal category with a score of 24-5, were deserving victors and will return to Barcelona with significant knowledge garnered during their brief trip to the United States.
