real salt lake x colorado rapids
Bobby Wood scored his first MLS goal for Real Salt Lake in a 3-0 triumph over the Colorado Rapids on Saturday night, propelling his new team to victory in the first Rocky Mountain Cup match.
The game started with an own goal by Rapids goalkeeper William Yarbrough in the 14th minute. When center defender Lalas Abubakar felt pressure from Wood, he sent the ball back to Yarbrough, who misplayed the pass and handed RSL the lead as the ball slid under his foot.
RSL midfielder Albert Rusnak took advantage of a quick break and sent the ball to Wood just before the 30-minute mark. RSL led 2-0 at halftime after the striker sped up the pitch and hit Yarbrough near-post with a left-footed shot. Rubio Rubin scored the third goal with 14 minutes remaining to put the game out of reach.
Colorado had two good scoring chances in the second half, one off a free kick just beyond the 18-yard box and the other off a corner kick that RSL left defender Ashtone Morgan saved off the line, but the home team preserved the clean sheet and took all three points.
