Seattle sOunders x tigres uanl
The Seattle Sounders beat Liga MX side Tigres UANL 3-0 in their Leagues Cup quarterfinal match on Tuesday night at Lumen Field, with goals from starters Raul Ruidiaz and Fredy Montero, as well as one from a super-sub called Nico Lodeiro.
In the early going, the match was pretty equal, with Seattle gaining a bit more of the ball and driving forward regularly, but it changed decisively in the Sounders' favor shortly after the 20-minute mark. Cristian Roldan broke into the area, and Tigres defender Erick Avalos, rather than allowing Roldan to advance to goal, committed the blatant foul. Ruidiaz went to the spot and buried it with a Panenka.
Tigres altered their style in the second half, replacing Avalos and recent French World Cup winner Florian Thauvin with Nico Lopez and Javier Aquino, two of their greatest strikers. However, in the 50th minute, the Sounders almost increased their advantage on a counterattack in which Roldan put Ruidiaz up for a shot, but the Peruvian got too much on it.
The Sounders then grabbed their elusive second goal in the 64th minute, after continuing to press forward and getting a corner. Joao Paulo delivered a promising cross that was deflected to a waiting Montero at the far post for a poked-home finish. Then, not long after coming on as a sub, Lodeiro — who had just recently returned from a long injury — pulled up from around 30 yards out and unleashed a golazo that put an end to whatever chance Tigres had. In the 74th minute.
Seattle started virtually all of their first-team players, and they even got to bring in Lodeiro as a sub, who demonstrated he's back with a fantastic goal only minutes after entering the game. Obviously, no one wants to be a part of the Sounders in League Cup, but no one in MLS wants to play against them when they're on fire, including their biggest rivals, the Portland Timbers, who host them on Sunday. This one will be talked about for a long time.
