Atlanta United x New York Red Bulls
The New York Red Bulls extended their all-time regular-season unbeaten streak against Atlanta United to nine games on Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, when the Eastern Conference rivals drew 0-0. The Red Bulls will undoubtedly be the more pleased of the two teams, having earned their first point away from Red Bull Arena this season. Atlanta pushed for a late winner and came within inches of netting it off a header, leaving the Five Stripes without a win in five games, four of which were draws.
The Red Bulls nearly punished Atlanta for a careless backpass in their own area in the 39th minute, giving them the biggest opportunity of a scoreless first half. Franco's backheel was picked up by Carmona, who fed an open Patryk Klimala. However, Brad Guzan intercepted the attempt and recovered the ball as it approached the goal line.
Kyle Duncan got around Franco and into a dangerous position inside the 18-yard box in the 58th minute. However, the right back's pass at the goal line, which was meant for no one, in particular, rolled away unharmed. Duncan had a better scoring chance 10 minutes later, but Guzan chested down his left-footed attempt before it was cleared away.
With a flurry of chances late in the game, Atlanta came close to claiming all three points. But, in the 78th minute, Carlos Coronel did well to dive to his right and deflect Brooks Lennon's open shot in the box. In the 83rd minute, Marcelino Moreno followed up with a shot on frame while on the turf during a tussle in front of goal, and Coronel was there to deny him once more.
Miles Robinson had the finest chance of the bunch, latching onto a Lennon corner kick, but his downward header caromed off the post one minute from time.
