NEW YORK RED BULLS x ORLANDO CITY SC
On Saturday at Red Bull Arena, the New York Red Bulls handed Orlando City SC their first loss of the 2021 MLS season, winning 2-1 to build momentum heading into the June international break.
Caden Clark opened the scoring in the 35th minute, finishing at the back post a right-channel cross from Patryk Klimala. After starting the attacking move, the 18-year-old midfielder was unmarked and tapped home for a 1-0 lead.
In the 60th minute, Cristian Casseres Jr. doubled RBNY's lead by curling home an inch-perfect free kick from atop the penalty area. Pedro Gallese, the goalkeeper for Orlando City, watched the midfielder's shot sail into the top corner.
Orlando, on the other hand, did not fade, and winger Silvester van der Water equalized in the 84th minute by slotting underneath RBNY goalkeeper Carlos Coronel. Tesho Akindele cushioned a right-wing cross, and the second-half substitute finished clinically to make it 2-1.
For the second game in a row, the hosts came close to scoring early, but Gallese tipped Sean Nealis' header over the crossbar. John Tolkin, a homegrown left back, whipped in a free kick, and the center back nearly nodded home.
The Red Bulls rebounded from two straight road losses, removing Orlando from the trio of undefeated teams that carried the flag into week 7. Head coach Gerhard Struber's team delivered a convincing performance, with Clark's fourth straight home goal propelling them to a decisive win. The Lions' offense struggled at times, with projected mainstays Nani, Dike, and Pato, all missing for various reasons.
