real salt lake x minnesota united
Niko Hansen's late goal saved a point for Minnesota United, who drew 1-1 with Real Salt Lake last Saturday at Rio Tinto Stadium.
The hosts wasted no time in getting shots on goal, coming within inches of scoring in the seventh minute through Paulo Ruiz. The team did not have to wait long for the game's first goal however, which was scored by Damir Kreilach in the 13th minute. Aaron Herrera delivered a free kick to Ruiz on the right side of the field. Ruiz then passed the ball across the front of the goal, where Kreilach was waiting for a light touch sending RSL ahead.
RSL stayed in control of the match for a little longer, but the rhythm of play changed around in the midway point of the first 45. The Loons came close in the 28th minute when newcomer Adrien Hunou's header flew just wide. Despite their best efforts, Minnesota failed to score in the first half.
The second half was back and forth, with neither team really grabbing the edge, as they went 30 minutes without a shot on target from each side. With a long-range shot in the 75th minute, RSL's Justin Meram forced goalkeeper Tyler Miller into a save. However, this would be some of the little bits of action the game would hold.
In the 78th minute, a goalkeeping error resulted in Minnesota's first shot on goal and an equalizer. Zac MacMath had been unable to collect a cross, with the ball bouncing out of his reach, off Hansen, and then into the back of the net.
The goal inspired the hosts to go back in search of a win they thought was theirs, but Miller rescued a Meram shot in the 90th minute keeping both teams deadlocked as we came to the full 90.
The two teams played a fairly even match, but the outcome was determined by a goalkeeping error that gave a gift to a Minnesota team that otherwise lacked accuracy and urgency going forward. The dropped points drop the hosts just below the Western Conference playoff line, while Minnesota picks up another valuable point as they look to rebound from a winless start to the season.
