OL Reign x Chicago red star
Following their loss to the North Carolina Courage on Saturday, the OL Reign rebounded in style on Tuesday night in Cheney Stadium, defeating the Chicago Red Stars 2-0. Both teams played on Saturday, but Farid Benstiti's side seemed unaffected by the short turnaround, as roughly 2,500 supporters in Cheney Stadium were dazzled by hints of what this team of prolific international stars and upcoming stars can do. The opening half was dominated by the OL Reign. Even with the larger context of Chicago's setup not having much experience playing together, which resulted in Fishlock and Marozsán feasting in the middle, their leadership in the first half resulted in Balcer and Huerta receiving more touches on the wings. Huerta, like the rest of the club after the setback at North Carolina, responded well to the overall image of the evening.
If OL Reign had finished the chances they had in the second half, they could have and perhaps should have made the score much more lopsided. Eugénie Le Sommer made her long-awaited OL Reign/NWSL debut in the 65th minute, and she almost had an immediate impression. Le Sommer was given two more opportunities to score. Obviously, a goal in your debut would have been fantastic, but given that she only arrived last week, even the glimpses fans got in person left them in awe of what has made her one of the most promising players in the game.
The OL Reign's next encounter comes on Saturday, so it'll be another quick turnaround. Thankfully, they won't have to travel because they'll be back in the comfort of Cheney Stadium. On Saturday, June 26, the OL Reign will face Gotham FC in an attempt to revenge their setback to them earlier this month at Red Bull Arena.
