The Thorns and the Reign met for the second time in less than two weeks in the 2022 NWSL Challenge Cup. The Thorns were defeated 0-1, following a 1-1 tie in Lumen Field. With dangerous crosses from Sofia Huerta and winning balls in the middle, OL Reign quickly took control of the game. For the visitors, Rose Lavelle took charge of the midfield for the Reign, but after 10 minutes, Portland began to enjoy more prolonged possession. The game was close at the end of the first half, with Portland having the better chances.

The Reign had the ball early in the second half, similar to the first, but Portland eventually took control of the game and created better chances. Portland's intentions were unaffected by Rose Lavelle's goal, as they continued to search for an equalizer until the final whistle. However, they never found one as they would fall 0-1 by the time the final whistle blew.
