portland thorns x orlando pride
In a game they were never truly in, the Orlando Pride fell 2-1 to the Portland Thorns. The Thorns dominated the game but were unable to capitalize on most of their opportunities.
Portland dominated the opening half of the game, with the Pride struggling to sustain possession. While the Pride defense was able to intercept passes inside the box, they frequently handed the ball back to the Thorns for a second opportunity. Kelli Hubly was presented with a great opportunity in the 24th minute. Hubly was alone at the top of the six when Celeste Boureille arrived. The defender fired a shot toward the goal with just Harris in front of her, but it sailed over the crossbar.
The Thorns eventually broke through two minutes later with a fantastic solo effort. Sophia Smith was able to win the ball in her own third and carry it with little opposition all the way to the Pride's box. For the game's first goal, her long-range shot beat Harris to the near post.
The Thorns ultimately doubled their advantage in the 58th minute after many chances in the second half. The first free-kick was cleared, but it was intercepted by Klingenberg, who redirected it into the goal. Inside the six, Weaver beat Turner to the ball and headed it in. Harris managed to get a touch on it, but it wasn't enough, as the ball was deflected into the goal.
Late in the game, the Pride scored a consolation goal. Kim found Marisa Viggiano at the top of the box five minutes into stoppage time in the second half. The midfielder cut the Thorns' advantage in half with his second touch, a rocket past Bixby.
