real salt lake x Austin fc
Real Salt Lake beat Austin FC 1-0 on AAPI Night at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday, with Hawaii-born striker Bobby Wood scoring the game's only goal. Brad Stuver was put to the test in the first half, making three saves, but RSL broke through in the 32nd minute, going down the right wing via Jonathan Menendez, who crossed into Wood. The former US men's national team striker found space between two defenders to slash a header past Stuver and into the net.
Austin's disappointment was compounded by the fact that they had two promising chances just minutes before. Hector Jimenez first crossed to Tomas Pochettino, who hit a header just wide of the target. The visitors' first-half performance was as good as it got, with 60 percent possession but zero shots on goal.
The second half began with a bang, as a Verde turnover led to Justin Meram bearing down on goal and Julio Cascante pulling him down just outside the box less than two minutes after play resumed. The action was originally deemed a yellow card, but after Video Review, referee Dave Gantar altered it to red. To keep a true back four, Austin head coach Josh Wolff substituted center back Jhohan Romana for No. 1 SuperDraft pick Daniel Pereira, a midfield catalyst.
In the 72nd minute, Wolff was forced to make another substitution when Sebastian Driussi, who was making his debut start but unable to make an impression, took Marcelo Silva's cleat to his leg and had to be replaced by Jon Gallagher. RSL made their own substitutions, including one that capitalized on a sibling rivalry by inserting Nick Besler, a midfielder, to replace Austin defender Matt Besler.
Austin only had one shot on target during the game, but Stuver added to his legend with four more second-half stops to hold RSL at a one-goal deficit. Austin, on the other hand, had another fruitless night, having failed to score in 11 of their past 14 games. RSL, meanwhile, ended a three-game losing streak.
